Marvel Comics Superhero 'Thor' Becomes Female: Creators Admit Time for Change to Mjolnir Hammer's 'Worthy' Inscription
A female Thor was featured in a piece of art that accompanied the announcement introducing Marvel's latest comic book series project, according to CBR. While one host of ABC's "The View" referred to this new character as "Thorette," she was corrected by Whoopi Goldberg who said that the character is Thor.
Marvel reportedly said that the classic male hero will no longer be able to wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir but a brand new female hero will take on the name of "Thor" and emerge as one who is worthy of the name and the power.
While the inscription on the hammer specified that the power of Thor shall be given to whomever holds the hammer if "He" is worthy enough to wield it, Marvel editor Will Moss said that it's time to change things and update the inscription.
Moss further stated that this move is consistent with Marvel's proud tradition of featuring strong female characters such as Black Widow, Storm, She-Hulk and Jean Grey, among others. He finally clarified that this new series is not a spin-off and that she is now Thor, the one and only holder of the power of Mjolnir -- and she is worthy. The new character takes over the role after the previous Thor saved her and she somehow remade herself to become the next hero.
While comic book publishers do not actively target women and girls, female Thor is the eighth superhero comic featuring a lead female protagonist. Jason Aaron, the writer of the series, emphasized that the character is NOT Lady Thor, nor She-Thor, nor Thorita, but she IS THOR.
The new comic book series, an evolution from the traditional notion of comics, will be introduced this coming October. Marvel could not contain their excitement as the comic book company posted a teaser on their official Twitter account.
