"The Flash" TV Series Update: Wentworth Miller Joins The Cast As Captain Cold; And A Former Flash Is Also In The Series
Captain Cold, a long-time enemy of the Flash, has been cast for "The Flash" TV series.
It was announced last Friday at the Television Critics Association press tour panel that Captain Cold will be played by Wentworth Miller, of "Prison Break" and "Underworld," in The CW's "The Flash."
Miller is bringing with him dramatic acting and writing talents, so it will be fascinating to see how he plays the Flash's villain. Miller had taken some time off of acting to focus on his screenwriting career; he wrote "Stoker" (2013), which starred Nicole Kidman, and an upcoming film "The Disappointments Room," HitFix reported.
Miller's Captain Cold is expected to appear in episode four of "The Flash," The Hollywood Reporter noted. In the DC Comics, the infamous Leonard Snart, aka Captain Cold, becomes the leader of "The Rogues," who always oppose the Flash.
Captain Cold was introduced way back in 1957 in the comic book. As the leader of the aforementioned "The Rogues," Captain Cold has a powerful freeze gun, and he is known to create freezing climates.
Greg Berlanti, the show's producer, teased at the press tour panel that the audiences will be seeing Captain Cold and The Rogues' origin story.
By adding John Wesley Shipp, the original Flash from CBS' 1990 version of the same name, this show's producers appear to be continuing the canon of "The Flash."
"We're incorporating almost everything from the mythology into it and have added a whole new backstory with the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator," said Geoff Johns, CEO of DC Entertainment, during the panel for the new series, Deadline reported. The series will have Grant Gustin in the titular role as Barry Allen, aka The Flash. And Shipp is expected to play Barry's father.
"The Flash" centers on Barry Allen, living and working in Central City as an assistant police forensic investigator. Gustin's Barry Allen visits Starling City to investigate some unexplained robberies that perhaps have a connection to Barry's tragic past. Just like in the comics, as well as the original 1990 TV series, Barry is exposed to chemicals via a freak accident; it is this accident that gives him the power of super speed, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
Also in the cast are Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Jesse L. Martin ("Law and Order"), Candice Patton ("The Game"), Tom Cavanagh ("Royal Pains," "Scrubs") and The CW's "Tomorrow People" star Robbie Amell. Amell is expected to play one half of the DC comic-book hero Firestorm, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
Amell's brother Stephen Amell, the star of "Arrow," is expected to make an appearance in the pilot.
"The Flash" will debut in the fall on Oct. 7 on The CW.
