Everyone who loves ice cream should know that there is such a thing as a "National Ice Cream Day" and that it will be celebrated this Sunday, July 20. According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), the special day was designated by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan in 1984 to be on the third Sunday of July. He then encouraged Americans to follow appropriate ceremonies and activities in observance of the National Ice Cream Day.

According to reports of the IDFA, ice cream is enjoyed by 90 percent of Americans, while at least $10 billion in revenues are made by ice cream annually. Around 9 percent of all the produced milk in the United States is churned to become ice cream.

Both consumers and retailers are encouraged to celebrate not just on the third Sunday but the entire month of July as National Ice Cream Month. Several companies are observing the celebration by offering deals and promos such as free waffle cone upgrades, cheaper ice cream and of course, free ice cream.

GOBankingRates has created a list of retailers who have special offers this month and on July 20. Some of these ice cream companies are Baskin-Robbins, Ben & Jerry's, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Bruster's Ice Cream, Carvel, Ciao Bella, Cold Stone Creamery, The Comfy Cow, Culver's, Dairy Queen, Fentons Creamery, Graeter's, MaggieMoo's, Sonic and Tillamook.

The largest ice cream chain, Baskin-Robbins, is offering a new flavor of the month for July called OREO 'N Cake Batter with cake-flavored ice cream and pieces of the favorite cookie OREO. Customers may also avail of a free waffle cone upgrade for every double scoop purchase.

According to Executive Chef and Vice President of Product Innovation Jeff Miller, National Ice Cream Month is among the company's favorite times of the year. The line of OREO-themed ice cream treats is available at participating Baskin-Robbins branches.
