Kansas 5-Year-Old Found Dead in Backseat of Car With Gunshot Wounds Following Police Chase
Police in Leavenworth, Kansas are looking further into a police chase and shooting involving a man and a 5-year-old girl.
Cadence Harris, 5, was found dead with gunshot wounds in the back seat of the 30-year-old suspect's truck. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated or his injuries following a Friday night car chase. Authorities said they were responding to a kidnapping report, and the man led police on a chase. He then allegedly opened fire on officers when they surrounded him.
Police have also said there is no evidence that Cadence was killed by bullets fired from the officers.
Officials are not yet releasing the suspect's name, but a woman claiming to be his grandmother told KMBC 9 News that there was no kidnapping; the man was like a father to Harris although he was not related to her. She told the news outlet that the incident was an argument that went terribly wrong.
"Our community will not stand idly by if they have information about the death of a 5-year-old girl," Police Chief Pat Kitchens said. "They will come forward, and they will provide information that's necessary to help us determine exactly what happened. I have great confidence in our community to do that."
Kitchens went on to say that community members had already come forward with useful information, saying the investigation is "fairly complicated" and there was "a lot of information [police] are trying to sort through."
Police said they were alerted when an active warrant for the man's arrest was issued after he missed a court date Thursday regarding an ongoing domestic violence case.
Cadence's body is being autopsied, according to investigators, who said the investigation may take several days or weeks to examine. Mark Malick, special agent in charge of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, said the investigation was "nowhere near concluded."
