MacBook Pro Retina vs. MacBook Air Comparison: Here Are the Prices and Specs You Need to Know
If you're in the market for a laptop, a MacBook is a great choice, but in the past, the prices have swayed people away. Now, there's been several price drops on both the MacBook Pro Retina and the MacBook Air. So, is now the time to get one?
The MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch model with 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM, a 128 GB of flash storage (hard drive) space is being offered at a discount of $100 to $150 off the retail price of $1,299. Adorama, a value added reseller of Apple and other electronics is selling that model for $1,199 and so is B&H Photo.
Another MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch model with more RAM (8 GB) and 256 GB of flash storage is being offered at those same two retailers for $1,399. Apple sells it for $1,499.
A similar deal is going on with the MacBook Air 13-inch model with 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of flash storage space is being offered from Adorama for $949. Apple sells that model for $999. For a little more storage and RAM, Adorama sells a 13-inch MacBook Air with 8 GB of RAM with 256 GB flash drive storage space for $1,079. Apple offers that model for $1,199
The prices of the two MacBooks are getting closer to each other. You can now get an entry level MacBook Pro Retina for only $1,199. The extra crisp screen makes that extra cost worth it.
But, for portability's sake, the MacBook Air is much lighter and excels with the extra long battery life. Although the high-end 15-inch model of the Pro is sporting a longer-lasting battery, the price is awfully high. For a much cheaper price, you can enjoy the second-level MacBook Air and get up to 12 hours of battery life.
Those who command data intensive programs like Final Cut Pro and heavy Photoshop usage will be happier with a MacBook Pro, but even those who upgrade their MacBook Air models to the 8 GB models might be able to manage.
If the MacBook Air ever debuts a crisp Retina screen like rumors have suggested, there will be even less reasons to buy the MacBook Pro models.
