FDA Website Lists Listeria Monocytogenes Recall Items: How to Check Your Fruits & Baked Desserts and What to Do
Patrons of Trader Joe's, Costco, Walmart or Kroger might want to check on the items they bought from these stores, especially from the fruit section.
CNN reports that Wawona Packing Co. is recalling some products voluntarily, including nectarines, plums, pluots and peaches that the company had packed in its warehouses in Cutler, California between the dates of June 1 and July 12, believing that the fruits were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria is a bacterium that causes the disease called listeriosis when ingested, with 1,600 reported cases in the U.S. annually. Those infected could experience symptoms that include muscle aches, fever, diarrhea, other gastrointestinal problems, confusion, headaches and convulsions. However, antibiotics can treat listeriosis.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), concerned stores of Costco, Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walmart have posted notices on their websites about the nationwide recall of the fruits.
The FDA also mentioned that internal tests have been conducted at Wawona, which revealed the potential contamination. Consequently, the facility had to be shut down for sanitization. Following tests have shown negative results, clear of the food-borne illness.
Brent Smittcamp, the President of Wawona, said in a statement that no illnesses that may be linked to the products have been reported. He added that recalling the products was a precautionary step to minimize the risk to public health, which he also said is the company's priority.
The stores that distribute these products have urged their customers not to consume the fruits and to have them returned to the stores for full refunds. Other products with these fruits used as ingredients are also being recalled, such as cakes and pastries. The full list of the recalled items are listed on the FDA website.
FDA gives the following instructions to owners of bad fruit: "Customers who purchased the recalled products from Wegmans between June 1 and July 20 should discard the product at home and visit the service desk and identify the product for a full refund.
Wegmans will place automated phone calls to customers who purchased the recalled products using their Shoppers club card. Consumers with questions may contact Wegmans consumer affairs department toll free at 1-855-934-3663 Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern time."
Listeriosis can be a serious sickness, especially for pregnant women and children. While the facility has been cleared, the possibility of contamination cannot be ruled out.
