Celebrities have mostly chosen to remain quiet on the conflict in the Gaza Strip, but Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have decided to speak out.

Joined by Pedro Almodovar and other Spanish directors, actors, musicians and writers, they have decried Israel's actions in an open letter, noted the Hollywood Reporter.

"Gaza is living through horror these days, besieged and attacked by land, sea and air. Palestinians' homes are being destroyed, they are being denied water, electricity [and] free movement to their hospitals, schools and fields while the international community does nothing," they said in their letter.

Bardem and Cruz have asked the European Union to step in and "condemn the bombing by land, sea and air."

The letter, which was also signed by Montxo Armendariz, Lola Herrera, Nacho Campillo, Eduardo Noriega, Rosa Maria Strada and Benito Zambrano, placed the blame on Israel's occupation of Palestine's land.

On Tuesday, Israel fired tank shells and shut down the only power plant on the strip, according to Palestinian officials. This will affect the electricity and water supply for about 1.7 million people.

Since the fighting began earlier this month, about 1,175 Palestinians have been killed.

Other celebrities have spoken out about the struggle, and they have been met with criticism.

Selena Gomez, for example, posted a message onto her Instagram account two weeks ago.

"Please pray for those families and babies today. Please always remember what's important in life. It's not any of this. We are here to help, inspire and love. Be that change. #wearethenextgeneration," she said.

She followed up that post by explaining that she wasn't picking a side but that she was hoping for peace.

Joan Rivers was just one person who criticized the actress.

"Oh, Selena Gomez, yeah, that college grad," Rivers said. "Well if Selena said that... let's see if she can spell Palestinian."

Rihanna and Dwight Howard both tweeted #FreePalestine, but they both took back their messages.

Zayn Malik also tweeted #FreePalestine, and he has received death threats for his comment, noted Yahoo.
