Dave Chappelle Show Ends When Comedian Insults Hecklers and Walks Off Stage [VIDEO]
Comedian Dave Chappelle walked off stage on Thursday at the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival. Hecklers quickly drove Chappelle to end his headlining performance early.
Chappelle, who created and starred in Comedy Central's "Chappelle's Show," was the headliner for the comedy festival which took place in Hartford, Conn.
According to WTNH.com, Chappelle was on stage at the Comcast Theatre for 30 minutes before he walked off stage. Some boos and yelling were coming from the audience. Audience members said that Chappelle sat down and smoked a cigarette on stage for several minutes before walking off.
One audience member, Jeanell Elese, said that the comedian "had a nervous breakdown on stage."
According to fans, Chappelle also made some comments about the jeering while on stage and responded to the hecklers.
"All right, you guys," Chappelle said in a recording one fan took. "I like some of you, I hate some of you. I forgive some of you, but I don't forgive all of you. You guys have totally ruined my chances of running for Congress or something."
Fans are reportedly disappointed that Chappelle did not continue performing despite the noise.
"Never saw a professional comedian that could[n't] handle a couple of hecklers and made the whole stadium suffer," Elese said. "That's completely uncalled for. $260 down the drain."
Chappelle's performance, which was the closing act of the festival, had a contractually mandated time length.
"pipe down and let Dave Chappelle do his thing!" The Oddball Fest said via Twitter.
"Dave Chappelle lost his mind and fan base at his Hartford show tonight refusing to perform because the crowd wasn't quiet enough," another spectator said.
In addition, some believe that Chappelle displayed a poor attitude on Thursday night.
"There were a lot of lulls," Julie Sagis, a reporter for Courant, said. "[Chappelle said] something funny about how he'd hop a plane to South Africa in the morning like he did when he quit "Chappelle's Show." Then, he started lecturing the audience, insulting everybody rather than just the hecklers. It was like when your teacher says 'I'll wait' and sits there, waiting for the class to be quiet.'"
Chappelle ended "Chappelle's Show" in 2005. He was in the middle of the third season and left behind a large contract.
