Weekend Movie Trailers & Previews 2014: 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Get On Up' Lead New Releases
On Friday, the final month of the summer season will begin and a number of late releases will try and revive the slumping box office.
Latin Post takes a look at "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Get On Up" and some of the hottest movies that will hit the box office this weekend:
Guardians of the Galaxy
Without a doubt, this will be the biggest film of the weekend as it will begin a new franchise for Marvel. The fantasy feature, starring Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel, tells the story of an American pilot named Peter Quill, who finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. The movie has garnered rave reviews and Marvel hopes it will be a huge success as it has recently announced the sequel for 2017. The characters are relatively unknown to the Marvel world, but the company has been aggressively pushing it and will open it in 3,800 theaters. However, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is unlikely to revive the box office as there are no hopes it will break any box office records.
Get On Up
The drama genre has not performed well during the summer, but Tate Taylor's new film is the latest hope to revive the genre. The film, starring Chadwick Boseman, tells the story of James Brown as he rises to fame. The movie also stars Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Dan Akyroyd and Craig Robinson, and was produced by Oscar winner Brian Grazer. Universal hopes to reach the success of Taylor's last film "The Help" and Lee Daniel's "The Butler." Both of those movies obtained successful box office runs and were even critically acclaimed. "Get On Up" is likely to reach the African American demographic as well as Brown fans. Given the rave reviews it has obtained thus far, the movie is sure to get awards attention and will likely be a box office hit this upcoming weekend.
Calvary
After a successful Sundance run, the John Michael McDonagh film will be released through Fox Searchlight. The movie, starring Brendan Gleeson, tells the story of a good-natured priest who must battle the dark forces closing in around him after he is threatened during a confession. The drama has obtained rave reviews and pundits are already saying that Gleeson deserves an Oscar nomination. The film will roll out in four theaters this weekend but depending on how it plays, Fox will expand it in later weeks.
Child of God
James Franco's latest feature will be released a year after having premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The new film, which stars Scott Haze, tells the story of Ballard, who descends to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation. The film was one of the most controversial featured on the festival circuit and critics were divisive about it. Some critics have called it unwatchable while others have praised it for being true to Cormac McCarthy's novel. The film will be released by Well Go USA and the company has made sure to make mention of McCarthy's other film adaptations such as "No Country For Old Men" and "The Road." Franco's directorial features have not performed particularly well theatrically and with very little buzz, this film will likely have a short-lived run.
The other releases of the weekend include Vertical Entertainment's "Behaving Badly" starring Selena Gomez and the Sundance Documentary winner "Rich Hill." Arc Entertainment will also unveil "Louder than Words" starring David Duchovny while Kimstim will release the Berlin Film Festival Selection "The Strange Little Cat."
