Dallas Cowboys News and Rumors: Dallas Mailing Out NFL Playoff Tickets: Can This Team Make Postseason? [Poll]
Although we are still in August and the 2015 NFL playoffs aren't set to begin until January, that doesn't stop Jerry Jones from having fun.
The Dallas Cowboys owner is having playoff tickets mailed out already. The five-time Super Bowl champions have disappointed their fans many times in recent memory, but they're hoping this season will be different.
With the NFL preseason right around the corner, let's break down why the Cowboys will and won't make the playoffs this season:
Why the Cowboys Will Make the Playoffs
NFC East
This isn't the late '80s or early '90s anymore. The days of the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys winning a Super Bowl every year are in the past. In the 2011 season, fans saw the Giants win the division -- and later the Super Bowl -- with a 9-7 record. The last four division winners have all had 10 wins or fewer, thus opening the door for the Cowboys. Over the last three years, the Cowboys lost their playoff hopes on the final week of the season.
Tony Romo
Romo receives a lot of criticism because of his late game blunders, but the reality is he is by far the Cowboys' best offensive player. The Cowboys defense is the worst in the NFL and Romo has guided this team to multiple victories single-handedly. Romo has thrown for at least a 90 passer rating every year of his career and if he didn't get injured last season, the Cowboys may have made the playoffs.
Improved Offensive Line
There was a time when this team had the worst front five in the league. Opposing defenses look like the '85 Bears or the Purple People Eaters of the '70s everytime they faced the Cowboys. Jones has finally realized that issue and has addressed it. The biggest move they made towards that position was signing left tackle Tyron Smith (No. 9 pick) to a big eight-year deal. This will also help the running game with DeMarco Murray leading the way.
Why the Cowboys Won't Make the Playoffs
The NFC
The division the Cowboys play in might be weak, but the conference they play in is as tough as it gets. Three other division winners will automatically get in, and, of course, the Seahawks and 49ers will take up two spots. There's still other quality teams such as the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers who will be making playoff runs. Bottom line -- if the Cowboys are going to make the playoffs they must win the division.
Defense
The main reason the Cowboys haven't made the playoffs the last four season is because of their defense. As previously stated, it ranks worst in the NFL. As a matter of fact, last year's squad was the third worst defensive team in NFL history behind only the 2012 New Orleans Saints and the 1981 Baltimore Colts. Their 51-48 defeat to the Broncos is a symbolic game of the Cowboys
Jason Garrett
Most people strongly believe that the only reason Garrett got the head coaching position in Dallas is because he used to be the backup quarterback in the '90s. If Garret were fired today, would any teams be fighting with each other to get him? Probably not. Garrett, who used to play quarterback, has constantly abandoned the running game and put Romo in bad situations. He doesn't exactly come up with the most intricate plays either.
