Seeing an alligator that weighs over 700 pounds may be a scary situation for most people, but it was a chance to set records for two alligator hunting groups in Mississippi.

During this past opening weekend of alligator hunting season, two hunting groups achieved state records by catching two male alligators that both weighed over 700 pounds. The record-breaking feats occurred only two hours apart.

ABC News reports that amateur alligator hunter Beth Trammell and her team of five caught a 723.5 pound alligator on Saturday morning, besting the previous Mississippi record of 697.5 pounds.

"When we first saw him, I yelled 'oh my gosh we caught the Loch Ness Monster!" Trammel said. "It was totally unbelievable."

It took the group five hours and two more hunters to get the giant dinosaur-like animal onto their boat, ABC reports.

Trammel's record was bested in Mississippi by amateur hunter Dustin Bockman only two hours later, when he managed to bring a 727-pound alligator on his first catch of the day. It took Bockman and his two fellow hunting partners over four hours to bring the alligator to a sandbar to wait for assistance. Bockman said he couldn't believe how big the animal was.

According to Ricky Flint, Mississippi Alligator Program coordinator, this is the first state-wide alligator season that opened up a large amount of new territory, ABC reports. 

"We expect the records to get broken and these will be broken, as well," Flint said. "Maybe before the end of this season." If this is true, Bockman says he'll be up for the challenge again.

"If someone beats my record, I'll go out and try to stop it," Bockman said. "There's always a bigger one out there."

These two catches weren't the only record-setters to occur over the weekend in Mississippi. According to CBS News, a 10-foot-long, 295.3 pound female alligator was also caught on Saturday, setting the state length and weight records for female gators.
