Pinterest Adds Private and Group Messaging Functionality
A private messaging feature as well as group messaging capabilities has been added to Pinterest. This is the first time Pinterest has allowed this feature.
Pinterest users can now chat through a separate window when using the app or the website.
The way it is done is by first clicking on a Pin and then choosing to chat with the person who created the Pin. Once the chat starts, it will be just like any other text messaging and instant messaging service.
The chat feature also allows for group messaging.
"Now, when someone shoots you a Pin, you'd be able to reply with a message or send a Pin back!" Tom Watson, product designer said in a blog post.
"We hope this will help you plan projects, swap creative ideas and share your best discoveries with each other."
Pinterest is focused on exchanging ideas, recipes, projects, clothing ideas and more. The chat feature is similar to what Facebook and other apps have added over the years. Pinterest doesn't know how users will use the chat feature or whether it will be beneficial or whether users will abuse it.
"This is different from other messaging platforms because conversations are around a Pin, and are focused on planning something for the future," a spokesperson for the company wrote to press.
Facebook added WhatsApp to their messaging portfolio, purchasing the company back in February for $19 billion.
Snapchat added chat capabilities to its app recently as well.
Back in 2012, Forbes said that Pinterest was worth $7.7 billion.
If Pinterest can emulate Twitter and Facebook's success, the company could be headed for an excellent future. Although the company doesn't have the ad revenue and massive valuations that Facebook has, Pinterest is a creative company and could find a creative way to continue to grow and increase revenue.
