Tim Tebow describes himself on his Twitter page as an "NFL quarterback," but his days with that title may be limited.

The New England Patriots released the star quarterback after a short and unsuccessful stint. Tebow had a miserable start to the preseason with two poor performances in the first two games and didn't see time in the third game. He did bounce back with a better performance in the team's fourth and final game of the preseason, but it was too little, too late.

Patriots President Robert Kraft said he was "rooting" for Tebow but that he would leave the decision of whether to cut Tebow or not up to head coach Bill Belichick. Tebow's chances of making the roster were already slim heading into camp because the Patriots only carried two quarterbacks in three of the last four seasons.

Tebow went to Twitter to thank the team for giving him a chance.

"I would like to thank Mr. Kraft, Coach Belichick, Coach McDaniels and the entire Patriots organization for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a classy organization," he said. "I will remain in relentless pursuit of continuing my lifelong dream of being an NFL quarterback."

Tim Tebow's journey as a football player has now gone from being a Heisman Trophy winner to getting cut before the NFL season even begins. His struggles in the NFL are a reflection of the different style of play in college compared to college, as well as the increased competition and skill level it takes to succeed in the NFL.

Tebow won one playoff game with the Denver Broncos in 2011, his only successful season in the NFL so far. He led the team to a 7-1 record at the end of the season en route to a division title. Tebow was later traded to the Jets and saw very little playing time in 2012.
