Comic Book Movies: 23 Films Set to be Released Through 2020
The wave of comic book-based films is set to continue through the next several years, with 23 more release dates already scheduled. Beginning in 2015 through 2020, the partnered Warner Bros. and DC as well as Disney and Marvel will be rolling out these action films.
The number of movies released each year vary, with no less than two per year. In 2018, there is a combined six films scheduled to be released between the two studios. Overall, the average amount is four per year.
While fans seem to not be fatigued with superhero movies based on box office performances of these films, 23 additional titles is a large number added to the genre.
Many of the upcoming titles are still unknown, but several have been announced. They range from Marvel sequels to blockbusters like "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" to Marvel's spinoff of a female Spiderman movie.
There will also be new characters like "Ant-Man" and "Doctor Strange" or crossover movies like the highly-anticipated "Batman v Superman."
Suspected DC titles also include a Wonder Woman and Justice League film.
Besides the busy movie production schedule, Marvel also has several superhero television series lined up to premiere on Netflix in a deal that was announced last year. Television also has a few new and current series, including "Arrow" and "The Flash."
While comic book movies are currently doing very well, critics are concerned that bombarding the market with so many titles may be a bit too much.
"In Hollywood, movies usually only get the greenlit if there's a good script and a decent or promising director is hired," critic Will Perkins said. "Warner's aggressive release schedule makes it clear: They have a plan and they are going to make these movies whether or not they currently have scripts or filmmakers."
