Cabo da Roca News: Parents Fall off Cliff, Die in Front of Children
Two young children were devastated after they watched their parents fall 450 feet to their deaths while they were taking photos on a cliff at Portugal's Cabo da Roca.
Authorities say that the Polish couple took a dangerous path and then climbed over safety barriers with their children in order to take photos by the edge of the cliff on Saturday.
However, they lost their balance as they stood at the cliff's edge, reports MSN News.
As a result, the children, ages five and six, witnessed their parents tumbled over the cliff to their deaths.
"They were traumatized. It is the kind of thing they will never forget," a security guard told the Portugal Resident.
A fireman also told the newspaper that Maritime Police should remove trace of the little paths that run along the side of the cliff in order to keep tourists safe.
"The paths encourage people", said José Dias. "Tourists think they must lead somewhere. They climb the fences -- not thinking that they have been erected to protect people's lives -- and then terrible things like this happen."
A Spanish couple also witnessed the incident and pulled the children to safety, before alerting authorities.
"I didn't see any of this happening", said security guard José Gonçalves. "But a Spanish couple saw it all. They rushed to the aid of the children and brought them back down. They were traumatised. It is the kind of thing they will never forget", he said.
To help the kids cope with the tragic freak accident, the children are undergoing psychological counseling and are being held by Polish diplomats, reports the Telegraph.
The bodies of the couple, who are believed to be in their 40s, were recovered on Sunday in the Atlantic Ocean after a search party was delayed Saturday due to inclement weather, reports Polskie Radio.
