Chris Pratt: Actor Talks of His Homeless Days Before Stardom
While his star is currently on a nothing-but-up trajectory, "Guardians of the Galaxy" actor Chris Pratt shared a photo on his Facebook account Friday that shows a not-so-glamourous past. Pratt, now 35 years old, posted a picture of himself much younger in front of a Scooby-Doo painted van that he lived in when he was financially struggling.
"Can't believe I found this picture!!!" he tagged with the pic. "That is the van I lived in!!! In my hand is the script for the movie that got me out of Maui. Crazy."
E! News speculates he was referring to the 2000 short horror movie, "Cursed Part 3."
While he is a fan favorite on the small screen as Andy Dwyer on "Parks and Recreation," Pratt recently bulked up for the summer hit movie "Guardians."
In an interview with The Independent, Pratt explained how he lived before making it as an actor. After only completing one semester of college before dropping out, Pratt took a friend's offer to buy him a one-way ticket to Hawaii.
"It's a pretty awesome place to be homeless," he said. "It would be different if I lived on the streets of Chicago and ate garbage from a dumpster. We just drank and smoked weed and worked minimal hours, 15-20 hours per week, just enough to cover gas, food and fishing supplies. You know, it was charming time."
After beginning work as a waiter at Maui's Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Pratt one day waited on actor-director Rae Dawn Chong, star of "Commando." When Pratt realized he was waiting on an actress from one of his all-time favorite movies, he began wise-cracking about his own acting chops until Chong offered Pratt a role in a movie she was directing, "Cursed Part 3."
"Originally the dream was to pay my bills doing nothing other than acting," Pratt said. "I got there, but the dream is constantly evolving. Then my dream was to do roles that are more than just the bad guy, or the douche. Then it was to do sidekick roles then comedy. Now it's like I've crossed over this line where I actually say no to stuff. I could never have fathomed that."
Since finishing promotions for "Guardians of the Galaxy," Pratt has returned to "Parks and Rec," as well as to his wife, actress Anna Faris and their son Jack.
