A Wyoming-based NAACP leader wanted to address the Ku Klux Klan face to face, and that is exactly what he did.

Jimmy Simmons represented the NAACP in a secret meeting with KKK organizer John Abarr at a hotel in Casper, Wyo. The Casper Star-Tribune said the meeting took place with tight security. Simmons called for the meeting to discuss allegations of racial slurs and attacks targeting black men who are dating white women. Simmons also wanted to address reports that the KKK distributed racist literature. Gillette Police Lt. Chuck Deaton said that a man was distributing material that asked people to "save our land and join the Klan."

Abarr claimed that he knew nothing about the alleged violence or the literature.

The Southern Poverty Law Center and the United Klans of America said that the meeting between the two sides was the first of its kind.

"It's about opening dialogue with a group that claims they're trying to reform themselves from violence," Simmons said. "They're trying to shed that violent skin, but it seems like they're just changing the packaging."

The meeting ended with Abarr filling out a membership form to join the NAACP so that he could receive the newsletters and learn more about the group's motives. He paid $30 to join and an addition $20 for a donation.

Although Abarr joined the NAACP, he made it clear that black people would not be welcome to join his racist KKK group.

"You have to be white to join the Klan," Abarr said.
