Star Wars 7 Release and Production News: Rian Johnson, JJ Abrams Opt For Less CGI in Upcoming Film
Rian Johnson, one of the upcoming directors in the "Star Wars" movie franchise recently opened up about the creation of the highly anticipated "Star Wars Episode VII" movie premiering in theaters next year.
During his Girls in Hoodies podcast interview, Johnson revealed that the "Star Wars Episode VII" movie incorporates more practical effects and less CGI. [The Hollywood Reporter]
"They're doing so much practical building for this one. It's awesome," Johnson said.
"I think people are coming back around to [practical effects]. It feels like there is sort of that gravity pulling us back toward it. I think that more and more people are hitting kind of a critical mass in terms of the CG-driven action scene lending itself to a very specific type of action scene, where physics go out the window and it becomes so big so quick."
"Star Wars'" original creator George Lucas was criticized in the past for his excessive use of CGI in his "Star Wars" prequels, CinemaBlend reported.
However, J.J. Abrams, the director of "Star Wars Episode VII," and Johnson, who will direct "Star Wars Episode VIII and IX," seek to give the upcoming "Star Wars" films a "real feel." [CinemaBlend]
Last year, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams spoke about wanting to make "Star Wars Episode VII" feel "as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible."
"We are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible. Whatever your favorite Star Wars movie is and how to compare it is really sort of subjective," he said.
Abrams continued to reveal his desire to create the upcoming "Star Wars" film as authentic as when he was first introduced to "Star Wars" at the age of 11.
"We all know that [creator George Lucas'] dream has become almost a religion to some people," he said. "I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real, to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right."
