MLB Standings: Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels Take American League Division Leads
There's only one full month remaining in the 2014 Major League Baseball season. With less than 40 games left to play, every game is critical going forward.
The Oakland Athletics owned the best record in all of MLB baseball for nearly the entire season, but they've been struggling lately. The entire American League is going to come down to a tight finish. The trade deadline has come and passed, so there's no more dealing with other teams.
The two hottest teams in the majors right now are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Kansas City Royals:
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
The Angels have been the most underrated team this season. Despite the fact that the Athletics have had the best record in the majors for almost the whole season, the Angels have been right behind them the whole time. The Angels are 8-2 in the last 10 games, which places them in first place in the American League West. As a matter fact, their recent winning ways have put them in first place in all of Major League Baseball with 75-50 record.
Albert Pujols is having a resurgent season. The 33-year-old future Hall of Famer from the Dominican Republic leads the Angels with 137 hits. Mike Trout has been the driving force with 27 home runs, and many people believe he could win the American League MVP. The Angels ranked No. 6 in team pitching with a 3.61 ERA, but Garret Richards recently suffered a big knee injury. It's still unknown how many games he will miss.
The Angels haven't made the postseason since 2009, but their fans will most likely watch them play this October.
Kansas City Royals
The Detroit Tigers have led the American League Central for the majority of the season. They made arguably the biggest splash at the trade deadline when they acquired pitching ace David Price. The Tigers are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and the Royals have taken advantage.
The Royals are currently 70-56 and find themselves in first place in the division. This club has won seven of their last 10 games, mostly because of pitching. Despite being ranked last in the entire league in home runs with just 78, the Royals are still finding ways to win. Billy Butler and Alex Gordon have been the two best hitters for the Royals this season. The Royals pitching staff has five pitchers with more than 90 strikeouts, two of whom are left handers.
The Royals have by far the longest postseason drought in baseball, having not made the playoffs since 1985. Making the playoffs this year would be great for the fans of Kansas City.
The Tigers and Royals still have six games to play between each other this season.
