Gucci Mane Jail 2014: Rapper Sentenced to 39 Months in Prison
Rapper Gucci Mane was sentenced to three years and three months in prison on federal gun possession charges. Mane, whose legal name is Radric Davis, has already served 11 months of his term, meaning he has 28 months remaining.
Davis pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in May, avoiding the possible 10-year sentence if he took his case to trial. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones added that the rapper would be placed under restricted travel for three years after his prison sentence. Davis will only be allowed to leave the Northern District of Georgia for up to seven days each month unless approved by his probation officer, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
His attorney Drew Findling asked for his client to serve his term in a West Coast-based drug program without the distractions and influences in the rapper's southern hometown.
"He understands he has some work ahead of him and his goal is to bring resolution to this case and get back to performing," Findling said as reported by the Journal-Constitution. "He doesn't want anything to distract him. He wants to do anything to get back to the work place and the work place is the stage."
The incident took place on Sept. 14, 2013, when police saw Gucci Mane walking down a street around 1 a.m. in Atlanta and asked for him to stop. Davis became "increasingly agitated with officers and began cursing and threatening them." After finding a 40-caliber handgun, 11 rounds of ammunition and a small amount of marijuana on him, Davis was placed under arrest.
He had violated his probation for a battery conviction from 2011.
"You're a young man, you have a full life before you," Judge Jones said to the rapper. "I see a lot of famous people move outside the line."
The judge also said, "According to young people, my nieces and nephews, you are quite cool."
