Surface 2 Tablet News, Price & Update 2014: Microsoft Cuts Surface 2 Price By $100
Right in time for back-to-school shopping, Microsoft has cut the price of each of its Surface 2 tablets by $100.
Microsoft's most recent release is the Surface 3, but the company is looking to boost sales on last year's model by lowering the price on each of the older models, even the LTE version that was released in March will receive a price cut, Daily Tech reported.
Until Sept. 27, or while supplies last, the price of the 32GB Surface 2 is $349; the 64GB Surface 2 is $449; and the 64GB Surface 2 LTE is $579. For comparison, the Surface 3 tablets start at $799.
The discounted Surface 2 tablets can be found at Microsoft stores and at authorized Microsoft retailers.
Significant differences exist between the Surface 2 and its younger brother, according to PC Mag. The Surface 2 family of tablets has an Tegra 4 processor and runs Windows RT, while the Surface 3 has an Intel iCore processor and runs Windows 8.1. The Surface 3 also offers increased screen resolution.
The Surface 2 was released last September and at the time won PC Mag's Editor's Choice award.
"The new Surface 2 offers even better productivity tools, with improved keyboard accessories, a smoother Windows RT experience, and a wide selection of familiar tools, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and now Outlook," the Surface 2 review said. "Throw in an elegant, improved design and dramatically better performance and battery life, and the Surface 2 reigns as the new Editors' Choice for Windows RT tablets."
Some reports claim that Microsoft slashed the price of the Surface 2 tablets ahead of an announcement of a Surface 4 tablet later this year. Microsoft is also rumored to be close to revealing its next operating system at a press conference on Sept. 30.
The new operating system has been called Threshold but likely will end up being called Windows 9.
