BBC 'Doctor Who' Season 8 Episode 1 Recap: Peter Capaldi, Clara Oswald and Matt Smith Appear in Premiere
The announcement that Peter Capaldi will be the new Doctor Who was met with open arms because the actor is a highly respected one with a long list of TV and movie roles, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Season 8 has just shown its first episode, "Deep Breath," and now it's time to have a recap.
In the opening scenes, the TARDIS was spat out by a T-Rex on the banks of London's River Thames and the Doctor and Clara were seen rolling in the mud. As he came to his senses, the Doctor learned of a plot that involved a group of stranded robots harvesting organs and skin to disguise themselves as well as repair their ship.
Conveniently, the trio of crime-fighters -- Strax, Jenny and Madame Vastra -- were around to find the Doctor and Clara. They did an investigation into a string of deaths which led them to the droid they were hunting: a clockwork repair bot that for centuries had been replacing itself with human parts.
The real plot in the pilot episode of Season 8 is the different face of the Doctor and how it will impact the relationship he has with Clara. There were many face-related scenes in the episode, including the Doctor not looking in the mirror and Madame Vastra lifting and lowering her veil several times.
There were close-ups of Clara's face while she held her breath to fool minions and the Doctor rips the face off a droid minion and disguises himself in another scene. There was also a scene of the clockwork droid killing a man to get his good eyes and killing the dinosaur to get its optic nerve.
It was not shown how the final confrontation with the droid and the Doctor went. Matt Smith appeared towards the end calling Clara to help him with his next reincarnation. The Doctor had a lovely moment when he said that Clara could see the real him although he said that he was not Clara's boyfriend. She replied that she never thought that it was so and he said that it was not her mistake.
