Xbox One Console and Device News: Microsoft Shipping Standalone Xbox One Kinect Device
In a rather curious move, Microsoft on Wednesday revealed that on Oct. 7 it will start shipping a standalone Kinect sensor for Xbox One.
The sensor is executed to sell for $150 and is said to include "Dance Central Spotlight" in the purchase price, according to PC World.
What makes this a curious move for Microsoft is that when it launched the Xbox One, it included a Kinect sensor and retailed for $500. The console didn't sell as well as the $400 PlayStation 4, so Microsoft released a Kinect-less version of the Xbox that sold for $400.
After the release of the $400 Xbox One, Microsoft said sales doubled.
So, essentially, Microsoft will release a product that costs $150, when consumers weren't even willing to pay $100 for almost the same product. Perhaps "Dance Central Spotlight" will persuade some of those consumers.
Microsoft claims that it is still focused heavily on the success of the Kinect, according to Time.
When the Xbox One was revealed, Kinect appeared to be the crowning feature of the console. But reports claim that consumers interpreted the higher cost of the console as Microsoft not paying enough attention to the actual gaming aspect of the Xbox.
Since June, consumers have been able to buy the Xbox One without Kinect, but were not able to buy a standalone Kinect sensor. That will change in October, but it isn't clear how much demand exists for the Kinect.
The motion-sensing device was released as a standalone unit for the Xbox 360 and sold for $150, but that was a "much-hyped, mid-cycle peripheral for a dominant platform," according to Extreme Tech.
To put price in perspective, Sony's comparable PS4 camera carries a suggested retail price off $60. It's available on Amazon for as little as $45.
Even though the Kinect is much more expensive, Xboxers needn't fear. A used Kinect can be had on eBay can be had for between $50 and $90.
