The University of Southern California Trojans suspended Josh Shaw indefinitely after the senior cornerback admitted that he lied about an ankle injury he sustained last weekend.

USC coach Steve Sarkisian announced on Wednesday through a statement posted on the team's official website that Shaw admitted that he fabricated the story about how he sustained an ankle injury.

Shaw claimed that he hurt his ankle when he jumped from the second story of an apartment after he saw his 7-year-old nephew drowning in the swimming pool. The Trojans even praised Shaw for his heroic act before the Palmdale, California native admitted that it was a complete fabrication.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," Sarkisian said. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story."

Shaw, who is expected to play a major role for the Trojans this season, has already issued an apology, which was accepted by the team. Sarkisian said, though, that the suspension from all team activities will remain, and he believes Shaw will learn a lot from his mistake.

"I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized," Shaw said. "Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident, and that the Trojan Family will accept his apology and support him."

Shaw also released a statement about the issue, confirming that the initial story about his injury was untrue, but he did not reveal the real reason why he hurt his ankle.

Rivals.com revealed, though, that Shaw was mentioned in a police report from the Los Angeles Police Department about an incident on Saturday night at the Orsini Building One.

A witness reportedly saw a man jumping out from the third floor of the apartment after he heard a female screaming for help. Initial description matched Shaw's physical features, but police department spokeswoman Liliana Preciado said that they are not considering the USC Trojan as suspect at this point.
