Apple iWatch Release Date Might Not Come Until 2015
Apple's iWatch is expected to make its worldwide debut Sept. 9 at Apple's press event, but consumers might do best to keep their enthusiasm in check. If a new report is correct, then the iWatch might not be available for purchase until 2015.
A new report from Re/Code states that a source "in position to know" says not to expect to go up for sale soon after its announced like many Apple products do.
"It's not shipping anytime soon," a Re/Code source said.
There's no concrete data on when Apple will ship the iWatch, or what's the reason for the holdup, but signs indicate that the iWatch could miss out on the busy holiday shopping season. It's hard to imagine Apple would want that, and until the Cupertino giant gives us official details on Sept. 9, there's no way to tell given the company's tight lips.
This isn't the first time 2015 instead of 2014 has been associated with the iWatch.
"We reiterate our view that iWatch, as compared to existing products, and as Apple's (US) first attempt at a wearable device, represents a much higher level of difficulty for the company as regards component and system design, manufacturing and integration between hardware and software," KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said earlier in August.
"While we are positive on iWatch and believe that the advantages of the design and business model behind it are difficult to copy, we think, given the aforementioned challenges, that the launch could be postponed to 2015."
It just so happens that Re/Code was also the publication to break the news about the iWatch being unveiled on Sept. 9. Apple recently sent out its usual cryptic press invites for an event on that date at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts that reads "Wish we could say more." A Re/Code report revealed that Apple plans on revealing not one, but two wearable devices at the event alongside a new iPhone. The wearables are said to make good use of Apple's HealthKit and HomeKit interfaces that are new in iOS 8.
Re/Code, formally AllThingsD, has a solid track record, although without any official confirmation from Apple, it's important to still treat everything with a healthy dose of salt.
It's still unclear how the iWatch will look and what specs it will feature under the hood. However, expect the wearable to be heavily integrated into Apple's ecosystem, especially the mobile side.
