Hundreds of Yazidi women taken by the Islamic State militants in Iraq while trying to flee Mt. Sinjar, are allegedly being gang-raped and sold for sex, according to The Daily Mail.

Survivors have told The Daily Mail of what life is like in the northern Iraq prison where Yazidi, Christians and Turkomen women captured by the IS are being held. They said prisoners were being raped and sold as brides for as little as $25. The woman are made up by beauticians before being raped by the soldiers, and some are forced to call their families after being raped to explain what happened, The Daily Mail reported.

Pakhshan Zangana, an official in The Kurdish Regional Government, told The Daily Mail that women brought to the jail are given two choices. The first option is to convert to Islam and be sold off for between $25 and $150. The second option, if they refuse to convert, is to be repeatedly raped and slowly die in the prison.

"We have women and families calling in every day, the situation is getting desperate," Zangana told The Daily Beast.

The Badush Prison is located in the northern Iraqi region of Mosul. The criminals who were previously housed there -- more than 600 Shia men -- were executed by IS in June when they stormed Mosul.

Zangana is trying to bring attention to the plight of the female prisoners.

At least 20 survivors and 16 eyewitnesses have confirmed similar incidents, according to U.N. Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay.

One mother said her daughter called her and told her about being raped by several men in the timeframe of a few hours.

Many of the youngest being raped are 14, and some of the women have given birth to children who are snatched from them, The Daily Beast reported.

Zangana is trying to help the girls by buying them back from the militants by using crowdsourcing with a promise of the money being returned. But without international aid, the task is much larger.
