Ukraine & Russia News 2014: Kiev Asks for More Sanctions Against Moscow
The European Union will seemingly impose new sanctions on Russia after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko warned of the his country's conflict with Russia being a threat to Europe as a whole. He urged for a strong response from the EU because his country is subject to military terror and aggression if nothing is done. According to Time these request were made during a United Nations Summit in Brussels on Saturday.
According to the Dailymail Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite said: "It is the fact that Russia is in a war state against Ukraine. That means it is in a state of war against a country which would like to be closely integrated with the EU. Practically Russia is in a state of war against Europe."
The BBC reports that Russia denies that its forces are backing the rebels who have been gaining leverage in Ukraine. The United States and the EU have already imposed sanctions on top Russian officials and separatists commanders but there has yet to be an agreement within the EU how exactly to deal with the situation in Ukraine
"Thousand(s) of the foreign troops and hundreds of the foreign tanks are now on the territory of Ukraine," Poroshenko said.. "There is a very high risk not only for peace and stability for Ukraine but for the whole peace and stability of Europe." Poroshenko said that sanctions against Russia will be prepared and implemented based on the success of his "peace plan".
EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said "sanctions are not an end in themselves" but a means to dissuade Russia from further destabilizing Ukraine. Barroso also told reporters "Russia should not underestimate the European Union's will and resolve to stand by its principles and values.
A Ukrainian military spokesman said that Russian tanks had attacked the town of Novosvitlivka and had destroyed almost all of the homes in it. It has also been reported that troops are trying to evacuate the town of Ilovaisk as it has been surrounded by rebels.
Despite Russia's denial, NATO estimates that there are at least 1000 Russian troops currently in Ukraine.
