'Extant' Starring Halle Berry: Review of Episode 10 Titled 'A Pack Of Cards' Part 2
Babies, growth, life, loss, aliens and a space station -- these are all of the exciting plot items that are fully emerging in "Extant."
"A Pack of Cards" is the title of Episode 10 in CBS' "Extant." It was indeed like a game, and the master card dealers were the alien baby, and Yasumoto (Hiroyuki Sanada). The card holders were Molly (Halle Berry), Sparks (Michael O'Neil) and even John (Goran Visnjic). This is Part 2 of my review of episode 10.
Giving birth to a child for some is a magical experience. But if you gave birth to a powerful alien, then one would perhaps feel happy, conflicted and even horrified. These were the emotions that fluctuated through Molly in this episode. She wants to see her baby, but she is still unsure of what it could do to her.
The alien baby appeared to be conflicted as well. On one hand -- in the form of Sparks' little girl -- it communicated to Sparks that they needed Molly. But on the other hand, it warned Molly that she was in danger by being with Dr. Mason (Owain Yeoman). Then it sent a flock of birds to separate her from Dr. Mason.
As was mentioned in Episode 9, this was the race to find the alien baby. Yasumoto, Molly and Dr. Mason were perhaps in the lead while Kryger (Brad Beyer) and Kern (Maury Sterling) were also closing in on the baby. The alien baby's control of the sheriff came in handy against Kryger and Kern. The sheriff tried to kill them both but to no avail.
Meanwhile, John sits at Yasumoto's home waiting for results from the mission, and Ethan (Pierce Gagnon), Julie (Grace Gummer) and Odin (Charlie Bewley) all seemed to be forming a bond with one another during the crisis. Unbeknownst to the Woods family and Julie, Odin is perhaps the bad guy. He is a member of a group that wants to destroy all forms of artificial intelligence (A.I.). Odin also seemed conflicted with being so close to Ethan and his family.
The master card players --Yasumoto and the alien baby -- have all come to a standoff. Molly gets mind-controlled by her own baby. This was where it got sad. The audience got to see through Molly's flashbacks the tragic accident that cost two people's lives. It was the car accident that killed Marcus (Sergio Harford), Molly's ex-boyfriend. And this was the subsequent accident that killed Molly's baby, leaving her infertile. Dr. Sam Barton (Camryn Manheim) was the one that attended to Molly on that dreadful day.
The loss was felt through the screen. Someone get Berry a Golden Globe and an Emmy. The alien baby used that lasting memory to manipulate Molly into doing something. In the newer memory, the alien projected an image that her first child and Marcus had survived the car accident. What did Sparks and the alien baby need from Molly? In an instant, we see Molly entering in some codes that lead to another space station far above the Earth.
No one counted on the wild cards however. The wild cards in this case were Kryger and Kern, who helped Molly to become free from the alien baby's mind control. The MKK Team (Molly, Kryger, Kern) were back together, if only for a brief moment. Sparks opened fire on them, killing Kryger. This helped Sparks to get away with the alien baby and his ex-wife Anya (Jeanneta Arnette), while Kern and Molly were left to pick up the pieces.
Back at the Yasumoto mansion, John learned to finally accept Ethan's growth. He also becomes wise to the fact that Yasumoto cannot be trusted. John gets Ethan to safety down an elevator and out of the mansion with Odin. Yes, Odin!
Is Ethan at all safe with Odin, the anti-A.I. rebel? What did the alien baby do to the space station? Do they want to bring others to Earth? Are Ethan and Molly still the key to stopping these alien beings?
They might not be answers to any of those questions now, but Yasumoto has lost this card playing round. It goes to the alien.
