Michael Sam could be the next member of the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.

After making it all the way through the St. Louis Rams' training camp activities, the first openly gay draftee in the NFL will reportedly join the Cowboys pending a physical.

Rams Were Stacked at D-Line: The Rams took a chance at Sam, drafting him in the seventh round of this year's draft. Scouts doubted his lack of size (6-foot-2 and 261 pounds) and speed way before he was even drafted. The Rams knew Sam's chances were going to be slim to make the team due to the fact that they already had a talented and stacked defensive line. Coach Jeff Fisher decided to keep a total of nine defensive linemen and five of those were defensive ends that the Rams thought were more talented than Sam. There was just too much talent for Sam to get a spot on that D-line.

Maybe the Rams stockpile of defensive lineman wasn't a good place for Sam. Despite his lack of size, Sam is a good pass rusher, and teams need a pass rushing specialist. He could be a situational player somewhere, but not an every down defensive lineman. Sam cleared waivers and none of the 31 other NFL teams have signed him yet. But, in the NFL there's always going to be injuries, suspensions and run-ins with the law that lead to openings for a guy like Sam.

Cowboys? On Tuesday, Sam was given an opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys plan to store Sam on their practice squad, which means that he will practice with the team but won't appear in any games unless he is promoted to the active roster.

Sam admitted he has had a rough week since learning of being cut from the Rams, but is "looking forward to being a Cowboy."

Popularity: Sam's journey to the NFL was heavily covered by national media. His Rams jersey was the sixth best-selling jersey among all NFL players this offseason.

"[Cutting Sam] is a bad business decision. They could've made so much money by having him on the squad," David Meltzer chief executive officer at Sports 1 Marketing, said according to the International Business Times.
