Derrick Rose Return Update: Mike Krzyzewski Urges Chicago Bulls Superstar to Be More Aggressive
USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski wants Derrick Rose to become more aggressive in their upcoming games in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.
Krzyzewski said in an interview that he knows Rose is just trying to get his teammates involved, but the longtime coach said that he wants the Chicago Bulls superstar to look for his shots as well.
"He's trying to get everyone involved," Krzyzewski said of Rose via ESPN. "He looks for his stuff not just fifth sometimes, but sixth or seventh. And we need him to look like he's 1 or 2 when he's out on the court. Look to make plays for people, but try to make plays for yourself, too. He's being very unselfish and trying to be a great teammate."
Rose, who was expected to become one of the leading scores for Team USA heading into the tournament, averaged just 4.5 points to go along with 2.7 assists and 2.0 rebounds in his first six games.
But while Krzyzewski and most fans are looking for him to score more, Rose said that he is not planning to change his approach, insisting that his role with the national team is different from his role with the Bulls.
"Everybody is getting mad because I'm not shooting the ball more," Rose said. "That's strange. I'm not gonna change my game just because people want me to shoot more. I'm gonna do exactly what the game tells me to do. This is my role on this team. With the Bulls, of course I'm going to get up 20, 25 shots."
In their first six games in the FIBA World Cup, Rose had just 37 attempts from the field with only eight conversions, including a measly 1-for-11 clip from beyond the arc.
Rose's struggles from the field have been haunting him all tournament long, but the 25-year-old superstar is confident that he will have a better shooting night in their quarterfinal match against Slovenia on Tuesday.
