Black James Bond? Denzel Washington Talks Discrimination, Says He Wants to Be Next James Bond
While promoting his upcoming film "The Equalizer" Academy award winning actor Denzel Washington revealed his desire to become the next actor to play James Bond and his experiences with discrimination and racism.
During "The Equalizer" press conference at the Toronto Film Festival, Washington explained that the film's shooting location in Boston brought about many uneasy feelings for him due to his past experiences with racial discrimination and prejudice in Boston, Yahoo! Movies reports.
Three decades prior to filming the "The Equalizer," Washington explained that he traveled to Boston to see his wife Pauletta Learson Washington perform in a play.
Following his wife's performance, the couple checked in a hotel and was harassed by people who immediately assumed that Washington was a pimp and his wife was a prostitute.
"I didn't know how to fight, but I knew how to win," Washington told the press at the Toronto Film Festival.
He continued the story by recalling the time he was called the n-word while attending his wife's show.
"'Hey n-, n-, n-, n-, hey boy.' I was like, 'Damn.' That was the taste I had about Boston," he continued.
While partaking in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" chat earlier in the week, Washington also expressed his desire to become the next James Bond, The Huffington Post reports.
Although Daniel Craig is already in the lineup to star in the next James Bond film, Washington urged fans to promote himself as the next James Bond after Craig.
"The next James Bond? They better hurry up!" Washington replied to a fan's question of Reddit. "Yes I would! Who's doing James Bond now... Daniel Craig! Did they shoot another one? Everybody should tweet Denzel is James Bond! Send it to the studio! We start the Denzel is Bond campaign today! James Washington. Denzel Bond!"
