'Utopia' TV Show Premiere Episode Recap: FOX Series Kicks Off With No Money, Power, Church or Laws
"Utopia" is a new show from FOX involving a one-year social experiment where 15 people will try to create their own civilization from the ground up, including deciding their own system of government, what food they will eat and how they should interact with the rest of the world.
The show is unscripted and the participants are settled in a remote location with limited supplies and no bathrooms. There is no prize awaiting the participants.
The first portion of the 3-part premiere episode aired on Sept. 8. The show's host was Dan Piraro, who opened the show by giving a tour of the location for "Utopia," where the participants will be living with no money, no power, no church and no laws.
The first to arrive was Hex, a huntress from the Midwest, followed by Jonathan, a pastor from Tennessee. They were then joined by Bella, Rob and Dedeker. Also on the show are Josh, a general contractor, Dave, an ex-convict, Red, a contractor/handyman, Aaron, a chef, Nikki, a yoga practitioner and Mike, a NY attorney. Andrea, Bree, Chris and a pregnant Amanda rounded out the cast.
When the group was assembled inside a barn, they were told that they had $5,000 in a safe, which they had to use wisely. They all brought their own possessions but were told to pool them and decide which items they would actually need. Dave freaked out and was allowed to take all his stuff, while Amanda did not want the others to know that she was pregnant after Aaron discovered her secret.
Bella wanted to use the group's waste for garden fertilizer but Josh was adamantly opposed. Aaron, the professional chef, announced that with the limited food supply the group would have to make do with only two meals each day. Josh turned into a pest early in the show, particularly when he got drunk and started harassing Amanda and the rest of the guys, Entertainment Weekly reports. It took Dave jumping on him to subdue him.
There was a lot of fighting among the cast since they came from different backgrounds. Aside from the pastor, it seemed that Dave was also a peacemaker. After the fights, the group ended by talking and forgiving each other.
