DVD Releases of the Week: 'Godzilla' to Lead Rental Sales; 'The Fault in Our Stars' Also Among New Movies
This week audiences will get to enjoy an array of different films on DVD, Blu-Ray and On Demand. The features include science fiction films, dramas and comedies.
Godzilla
The biggest release of the week is Warner Bros.' juggernaut blockbuster. The latest installment in the franchise tells the story of Godzilla, who is pitted against malevolent creatures who threaten human existence. The movie opened in May to great results and also obtained good reviews. By the end of its run, "Godzilla" made $200 million and prompted Warner Bros to announce a sequel. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Sally Hawkins, the action thriller will likely top the rental sales this weekend and will be admired by Godzilla fans and science fiction fans.
The Fault in Our Stars
Hailed as the breakout of the summer, the Shailene Woodley starrer is likely to gain a lot of attention in the next few weeks on home video. The romance tells the story of Hazel and Gus, two teenagers who are cancer survivors and meet at a cancer support group. When it was released in June, the film opened to great reviews and also made an outstanding $148 million at the box office. "The Fault in Our Stars" will likely attract women audiences and could gain awards attention in the coming weeks. With a weak Best Actress race this year, Woodley's strong performance could generate awards traction, which could likely expand the audience of the film.
Think Like a Man Too
The latest installment brings back all the couples from the original "Think Like a Man." This time they reunite in Las Vegas for a wedding, but plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event. The comedy stars Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union and Taraji Henson and was directed by Tim Story. Even though it scored bad reviews, "Think Like a Man Too" managed to make a solid $65 million by the end of its theatrical run. The new movie is likely to attract audiences who enjoyed the original installment, but will likely detract the uninitiated.
The German Doctor
The Argentine film tells the true story of an family who lived with Nazi officer Josef Mengele without knowing his true identity, and of a girl who fell in love with one of the biggest criminals of all time. The foreign film premiered in 2013 at the Cannes Film Festival and was Argentina's Oscar selection last year. However, the movie was not nominated. Samuel Goldwyn released the feature over the summer and had mild results in art house theaters. Originally titled "Wakolda," the American distributor changed the name confused audiences. However, now on DVD and with good reviews, it will likely generate good results among art house and foreign film fans.
Ilo Ilo
The Japanese film set in the late 90s tells the story of a friendship between a maid, Teresa, and young boy Jiale, which ignites the mother's jealousy. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was a major international draw, winning a number of awards at Palm Springs International Film Festival as well as Dubai International and the Asia-Pacific Film Festivals. Film Movement opened it for 15 weeks, but it was unsuccessful, the movie making only $56,773. The film should generate a better response when it comes out on DVD and on demand.
Evergreen: The Road to Legalization
First Run will release the documentary about how Washington State legalized recreational marijuana and the effects of this decision on the state, the nation and the world. The film premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival, where it obtained a strong response. While its theatrical run was short lived, it should find another life with educational outlets and audiences interested in documentary filmmaking.
