The New York Film Festival is fast approaching its kickoff on Sept. 26, and will feature a number of major films. Some of the films that will be on display at the festival have been making waves at major festivals.

Here is a look at the films to look out for at the grand showcase:

Birdman

Creative talent: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu directs while the film stars Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Amy Ryan among others.

Why see it? The film is the closing night feature and has been getting raves from critics since its debut at the Venice Film Festival where it won four awards. The film currently has a 94 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes, with critics raving about the acting, the cinematography and the overall construction of the film. Just take this review from Variety on the film:

"Judged by Howard Hawks' quality standard -- 'three great scenes, no bad ones' -- "Birdman" features at least a dozen of the year's most electrifying onscreen moments (scrambled, so as to avoid spoilers): the levitation, the hallucination, the accident, the fitting, the daughter, the critic, the ex-wife, the erection, the kiss, the shot, the end and Times Square."

It is a likely 2015 Oscar front-runner, especially when one considers that director Inarritu has managed to get most of his film's major Oscar nominations.

"Babel" was a best picture contender and Golden Globe winner. "21 Grams" begat Oscar nominations for its actors while"Biutiful" was a best foreign language film contender.

Gone Girl

Creative Talent: David Fincher is the director while Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris headline the cast.

Why see it? Two words - David Fincher.

This is the man behind "Fight Club," " Zodiac," "The Social Network," "Se7en," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" (the American version, not the Swedish) and countless other cinematic gems. For some perspective, Fincher has only had two "rotten" films (movies that have less than 60 percent critical approval) on Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of his films are Oscar contenders.

But what makes this most exciting of all is that Fincher is best when he does suspense thrillers. And this film, based on the best selling novel by Gillian Flynn (who also penned the script), is just that. A psychological thriller about dubious narrators and complex relationships. This should suit Fincher's talent well and make for an exciting film at the festival.

"Gone Girl" is slated to perform as the opener for the big event.

Inherent Vice

Creative Talent: The director is Paul Thomas Anderson. The film includes a superstar cast headlined by Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Eric Roberts and Reese Witherspoon among others.

Why see it? Anytime PTA has something to show, we watch. He is arguably the finest director of his living generation and his films are not only entertaining, but tremendously complex, engaging and relevant. "There Will Be Blood" might have been the finest film of the last decade while "The Master," which had its critics, was a masterful display of some of the finest actors in the world.

The new film promises to add some comedic touches to the proceedings, something that was often lacking in his most recent efforts.

"Inherent Vice" will make its debut at the festival as the centerpiece.

Jauja

Creative Talent: The Argentine film is directed by Lisandro Alonso and stars Viggo Mortensen.

Why see it? The Argentine film has been getting some tremendous buzz since premiering at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the FIPRESCI Prize.

"Those open to other possibilities in cinematic language may marvel at Alonso's ability to hold a viewer rapt through little more than landscape, movement and sound, and ideas (about parents and children, colonialism and its lingering discontents) that emerge implicitly rather than being directly stated," states a review from Variety on the film.

Mortensen is a top actor who usually engages in terrific worlds. Alonso is a rising talent who has four other features to his credit.

Foxcatcher

Creative Talent: Bennett Miller is the helmer for the film which stars Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carrell.

Why See it? The film won the Best Director prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and its success thus far has thrust into the position of frontrunner at the Oscars. Miller's films rarely ever fail to impress and this movie seems to be the most unique of all.

But what is most likely to get people's attention is Steve Carell's performance, which is obtaining tremendous buzz. The actor, usually known for comedic turns, has taken a completely new direction with this film and it should be interesting to see how he does with the darker parts of life.
