Marijuana Laws and Legislation: Alaskan TV Reporter Charlo Greene Quits Job On Air to Lead Weed Legalization Campaign [Video]
During a live television broadcast, a TV news reporter in Alaska dropped an F-bomb, walked off-camera and announced that she is quitting her job in order to run an organization that advocates for the legalization of recreational marijuana use in the state.
Former KTVA reporter Charlo Greene was in the middle of reporting on a story about the Alaska Cannabis Club on Sunday night when she then revealed that she, herself, is the CEO of the group.
"Everything you've heard is why I, the actual owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club, will be dedicating all my energy toward fighting for freedom and for fairness, which begins with legalizing marijuana here in Alaska," she said.
She went on to say that she is quitting her job as a reporter to work full time as a pro-pot advocate before she walked off-camera.
"And as for this job," she said, "well, not that I have a choice but, f--k it, I quit."
Following her unexpected statement, the camera cut to a shocked desk anchor who apologized.
News director Bert Rudman later issued an apology on behalf of the program, saying, "We sincerely apologize for the inappropriate language used by a KTVA reporter during her live presentation on the air tonight. The employee has been terminated," reports E! News.
Charlo admitted to Alaska Dispatch News that she planned the publicity stunt months ago and that no one at the news station was aware of it.
She also explained that she decided to make a dramatic exit in order "to draw attention to this issue."
She added that "the issue is medical marijuana. Ballot Measure 2 is a way to make medical marijuana real ... [M]ost patients didn't know the state didn't set up the framework to get patients their medicine."
In a follow up YouTube video titled "Why I Quit," Charlo further explained her decision to quit her job and encouraged others to vote "yes" in Alaska's upcoming November ballot initiative to legalize the recreational use.
