With last week's release, the technology industry has been sharply focused on the new Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. But, ever industrious, Apple has more up its sleeve and is said to be working on a completely redesigned MacBook Air.

The new MacBook Air could be released next year, according to rumors reported on Cult of Mac. Regardless of when the new machine is released, it likely will be a departure from the MacBook Air status quo.

Sources familiar with the project, including some within Apple, say that the new 12-inch MacBook Air will have a fanless, clamshell design available in the three colors of the iPhone: Space Grey, Silver and Gold.

The new laptop is also said to have a noticeably thinner design, which is something considering both versions of the current MacBook Air are 0.68-inches thick and weigh 2.38 pounds and 2.96 pounds, respectively, according to the Apple website. By comparison, the MacBook Pro is 0.71-inches thick.

The rumored MacBook Air is said to have the reversible USB Type C connector, which will allow a thinner design.

PC World has called the USB Type C connector the "Holy Grail of cords" and said that it offers high-speed connectivity, 100 watts of power and will be able to deliver audio and video signals.

In addition to the possibility of the new MacBook Air having USB Type C connectors, sources also claim that the MagSafe charging port has been dropped and the computer will charge some other way.

It's being reported that Intel's Broadwell processor will be used in the new MacBook Air because that processor specializes in working at low temperatures, which will be crucial in a fanless design.

Earlier reports have said that the Broadwell processors won't be available until early 2015, increasing speculation that the new MacBook won't come out until mid- to late 2015.

Rumors in June contended that Quanta Computer had signed on to manufacture the new MacBook Air, but, like almost all of these rumors, that has not been confirmed.
