Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri Rises Above Racist Comments For Being Indian-American
The winner for Miss America 2014 is a Syracuse, New York native, aspires to become a doctor and of Indian-American race.
The world of social media has certainly been filled with a lot of news revolving around not just the winner being from New York again but of tweets that link the crowned winner to terms of "terrorism" and "9/11" due to her Indian descent. Ms Davuluri was even referred to an aka of "the Arab" with other commentators noting the phrase, "This is America, not India." Some of the tweets related to this news were best gathered by a Buzzfeed post.
Despite of it all, the Miss America 2014 winner just ignores all of the negative comments that she's been getting especially during the first news conference she attended after the coronation, USA Today reports.
"I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American," she said.
The 24-year-old Miss America also explained her side on the controversy that surrounded her which allegedly happened days before the actual pageant night. Page Six reports that she has been heard in her hotel room that the previous Miss America 2013 who is also from New York, Mallory Hogan, was "fat as (expletive)." Davuluri claimed instead that the remarks must have been made by other people in her room and even the organizers of the event could not come up with any valid report about it.
Instead of highlighting the negative reactions that her triumph is getting, Ms Davuluri gives emphasis instead on her showcased talent during the pageant which is a Bollywood fusion dance. It was during her interview with Good Morning America that she shared how incredible the experience was performing on the Miss America stage with the knowledge that all her loved ones and closest friends are watching her live.
Miss America 2014 winner is a well trained Bollywood dancer having worked with famous Bollywood choreographer Nakul Dev Mahajan. She's a Michigan Wolverine fan as devotion to her alma mater and not many know that she once had weight problems, having weighed 60 pounds more than she is now, Syracuse.com reports.
And behold, sci-fi fans, Ms Davuluri is a self-confessed nerd as she is a big fan of 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek.'
