Sara Bareilles 'Brave' Hits Top 40 Due to Katy Perry 'Roar' Controversy
Fans of Sara Bareilles have noticed how similar Katy Perry's hit "Roar" sounds to Bareilles' "Brave." Bareilles is not concerned, however, and has actually benefited from the comparison.
When Bareilles found out that that people were talking about "Roar" sounding like "Brave," she was excited.
"I was stoked. I was like, 'Great,'" Bareilles said in an interview with Billboard on Tuesday. "I was like, 'You guys want to go get (mad) about something and buy my music, that's great.'"
Perry released "Roar" in August, while "Brave" has been out since April. After fans began claiming that Perry stole the melody for her song from "Brave," Bareilles' single rose all the way to Billboard's Top 40.
According to Bareilles, she is not concerned that Perry stole from her artistic creation. In fact, the two singers have even discussed the similarities.
"I don't feel like anything was taken from me artistically," the Grammy award-winner said. "I wasn't the one having any problems with it. I've known Katy a long time. We are friends, and she and I spoke about it. I look at it as two female artists who are releasing a message of empowerment."
Now, "Brave" has been certified gold, and it has peaked at number 31 on the Top 40 list.
Bareilles, 33, is more disappointed by her fans than she is with Perry, 28.
"To be totally honest, I was sort of disappointed in how aggressive fans were being about it," Bareilles said. "I don't promote drama in my life and competition and stuff like that."
Instead of drama, Bareilles prefers to look at the situation with a sense of humor.
"We actually talked about it. We're like, 'Should we just work on a mash-up and let everybody know we're not mad at each other?'" Bareilles told Billboard while laughing.
"Brave" was co-written with Jack Antonoff, guitarist of the band fun.
"I had a good friend who was struggling with coming out as an adult, so this is sort of my message to that person," Bareilles said.
The song is the first single from The Blessed Unrest, Bareilles' third album, which was released July 12 of this year.
Bareilles is currently on tour with One Republic. The tour ends Friday in Houston. She will begin her own tour in Boston on Oct. 6.
