Interstellar Movie News: Matthew McConaughey & Christopher Nolan Film Gets Oculus Rift Immersive IMAX Treatment
Have you ever wondered what would be like to be inside the cockpit of a spaceship? Or are you curious what could happen if the world comes to an end? Well, you're not alone.
Latin Post was on a mission to discover this virtual reality (that hopefully doesn't become an actual reality in our lifetime) and headed over to AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City to experience "Interstellar" Oculus Rift Experience, which was presented by Paramount Pictures and IMAX.
The virtual Oculus Rift experience, otherwise called "the immersive Oculus Rift Development Kit 2," was revealed on Monday in New York City and will travel throughout the country ahead of "Interstellar's" opening Nov. 7.
As a participant you have the chance to travel through a section of the Endurance spacecraft and "experience" zero gravity as you pass by floating objects on your way to the cockpit -- as you sit in a comfy chair that moves. The traveling exhibit gives fans "a virtual first look" at the new film through this immersive experience.
What is the film about?
"Interstellar" takes place when the Earth is coming to an end. "A team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history; traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars."
These explorers "make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage."
The exciting new film is directed, co-written and co-produced by Christopher Nolan and co-written by Jonathan Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas and Lynda Obst. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Jon Lithgow and Michael Caine, among others.
If director Christopher Nolan did it, then you have to try it -- he sported the virtual headset for the Oculus Rift Experience as well.
"I was impressed with how the experience is able to put you in the cockpit of Interstellar's spaceship, The Endurance. It was just like being back on set," Nolan said in a statement, according to USA Today.
Mike Woods, executive creative director of the effects house Framestore, told USA Today, "the Interstellar Oculus Rift experience is even 'a considerable step up' from the Game of Thrones experience his company created this year to wide acclaim."
Reportedly the project required a team of 15-20 people over the span of two months to painstakingly re-create the world and "the exact ship" from the movie.
"Interstellar" opens in IMAX and theatres nationwide on November 7, 2014.
