Soccer International Friendly Scores: ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez Leads Mexico to 2-0 Win Against Honduras
Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez made his first start for Mexico in almost a year and the El Tri striker made sure that his presence will be felt as he led his team to a 2-0 win against Honduras on Thursday.
Hernandez helped Mexico to take control of the match after netting a masterful goal in the 21st minute off an assist from Oribe Peralta before Oswaldo Alanis made it 2-0 in the 37th minute.
With Hernandez leading the charge for El Tri, Mexico managed to end their five-year drought against Honduras, while also helping his squad remain unbeaten since after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Mexico won against Bolivia last month and had a scoreless draw match against Chile.
Chicharito's goal on Thursday was also a crucial one him for him as it moves him a goal away from moving up to second spot in Mexico's all-time scoring list. Cuauhtemoc Blanco is currently second on the list with 38 goals, while Jared Borgetti holds the record with 46 goals.
But while he is now closer to putting his name beside the two Mexican football legends, Hernandez declined to take all the praise, saying that his teammates have played a big part in scoring all his goals for El Tri.
"I've never liked talking about myself and even less any focus on the national team being about one player," said Hernandez, who has only started in three games since Mexico coach Miguel Herrera took over in November last year. "It means the same as all those I have scored because it is a result of the work of all my teammates."
Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa, who captained El Tri in the match, also had an outstanding night, showing no rust despite not being featured in recent matches of Malaga in the Spanish La Liga.
Ochoa has not allowed a goal in their past three international friendly matches. He will look to keep his clean sheet when they collide with Panama in another international friendly on Sunday at La Corregidora.
