NBC's 'The Slap': Zachary Quinto Will Star in Controversial 8-Episode Miniseries
More big reveals for the cast of NBC's "The Slap" starring Zachary Quinto. Thandie Newton, Melissa George and Thomas Sadoski from "The Newsroom" have all joined the cast.
It was reported, at the end of last month, Quinto will be starring in the controversial eight episode miniseries "The Slap." But it was revealed this week that the Academy, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated actresses Newton and George will be stepping in to play other significant roles in the drama series.
At the core of the story, it is about how one man's punishment of another family's child explodes into a complex family drama. Quinto will play Harry -- the title role -- a married father who is seemingly pleased with his life, but he is always angry and yearns for confrontation. Quinto's Harry then chooses to pick a fight with a child, Hugo, who misbehaves. Brian Cox ("X Men 2: United") is expected to play Quinto's father Manolis.
After the slap, family fallout ensues. The slap takes place at a family barbeque. Newton has been cast as Aisha, Hector's wife. Hector, Aisha's husband and Quinto's cousin, is played by Peter Sarsgaard. Aisha is a doctor and mother of the couple's two children, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Aisha's in-laws come to the barbeque, and as a result she feels stressed.
George, who was cast in the original Australian version of "The Slap," will be portraying Rosie. George's character is a hippy wife and mother to their five year old son Hugo. Rosie is married to Sadoski's character Gary. Both of these parents spoil their child and thinks he is an angel. Rosie chooses to home school their son rather than send him to preschool, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
The slap stems from a discussion about preschool and advancing in life. Gary, with the help of too many beers, gets into the aforementioned heated discussion with Harry, Deadline reported. Out of that, Harry slaps Garry's son Hector.
Also in the cast is Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds," "Red" and "The Blacklist").
"The Slap" is written by Jon Robin Baitz ("The West Wing," "Brothers and Sisters"); and it will be directed by Lisa Cholodenko ("The Kids Are All Right"), The Wrap reported. And the executive producers are Baitz, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald ("Gladiator" and the "Men in Black" franchise).
