Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno is out for the remainder of the 2014 NFL season after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the team announced on Tuesday.

The Miami Herald reported that Moreno suffered his second ACL tear during their 27-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, sustaining his third major injury since signing a one-year, $3.275 million deal with the Dolphins.

Moreno reportedly hurt his knee on a catch and run during the third quarter of their match, but the running back did not show any sign of injury after the play.

The Dolphins were criticized for their handling of Moreno's injury, but coach Joe Philbin reiterated that the team was not aware of the injury. Moreno did not play for the majority of the second half, but Philbin said that it has nothing to do with the six-year veteran's injured knee.

"I didn't know of his injury and we went with the guys that we felt gave us the best chance to win the game," Philbin said of Moreno's injured knee.

The team discovered the extent of the injury when Moreno underwent MRI, which showed that the 27-year-old's ACL is too damaged to play again this season, which will be a big blow to Miami's campaign this year.

Moreno is having a good year despite suffering from various injuries. He holds the Dolphins' second-best rushing yards with 148 and carries with 31 this season.

"It's always tough losing a player, but when a guy brings so much emotion and intensity to the game, it's going to be tough without him," Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace said. "But we've got some guys who can hopefully rally together and fill those shoes."

Without Moreno, Lamar Miller, who has 330 rushing yards and three touchdowns this season, will carry a bigger load on his shoulder as the Dolphins try to improve from their 2-3 record.

"We've only earned two wins," Philbin said of their performance this season. "You've got to earn victories. I can sit here and say we should be this and should be that, but the facts are we played well enough to win two games. So that's all we deserve, really."
