Neil Patrick Harris may be appearing on "American Horror Story: Freak Show," but the actor had the chance to have a role in the FX anthology back in Season 1, "American Horror Story: Murder House."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio, Harris revealed that he was asked to join the show right after "A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas."

"In it, [David Burtka, Harris' husband] plays sort of my drug dealer, and I really am straight. And we've been pretending like we're gay, it's a very sort of meta joke," Harris said. "We have a terrible relationship, and we're shouting at each other and it's awful. Right after that, we were asked to be in Season 1 of this great new show called 'American Horror Story.'"

The former "How I Met Your Mother" actor, however, did not like the storyline pitched. Harris and Burtka were again to play a gay couple, but this time one that was "murdered in this house and then our ghosts are around for the thing," Harris said.

Burtka wanted to take the part, but Harris wasn't on board.

"It seemed cool," he said. "Loved Ryan, loved the idea of a horror anthology show. ... But we had just played ourselves as a couple, not getting along, and I thought, it just seems weird to do that twice, like as individual actors, to play a couple that hates each other twice. It just felt weird. So I said no, that we shouldn't do it. ... I said, 'I just don't want us to be known as a couple that don't like each other."

Harris added that the series is now "a big, gigantic success and super awesome," which may be why he is considering doing a guest spot on the current season. In an interview following the premiere of "Freak Show" earlier this month, Murphy said he is working on securing Harris for this season.

"He sort of had an idea of what he wanted to do, and I had an idea that he liked," he told EW. "If I can make it work, it will be something that shoots at the end. He's very interested in the show and obviously Neil is a magician and likes all that magic stuff. So he's fascinated with that. We're trying to make it work. I'm optimistic."
