Several Ottawa buildings are on lockdown after a gunman fired inside Canada's Parliament.

The gunman first shot at the National War Memorial, which ended with a soldier being wounded, before running into parliament, where the person continued to shoot, notes the BBC.

The Ottawa Police tweeted that the shots came at 9:52 a.m. on Wednesday.

Police told people in the area to steer clear of windows and roofs as they look for suspects.

"The indication are there is more than one gunman," Canadian MP Marc Garneau said. "There may be several."

The New York Times reports that it is possible that there were two to three shooters.

It is unclear if anyone else was injured other than the soldier, and the gunman's motives are also not clear.

An Ottawa City bus was being used as a medical facility and was heading toward the area.

Eyewitnesses said there were at least 30 shots, notes Reuters, and other sources say that one gunman was shot dead inside the parliament building.

Parliament member Mark Strahl tweeted about the situation.

"Very tense situation in Ottawa this morning," he said. "Multiple gun shots fired outside of our caucus room. I am safe and in lockdown. Unbelievable."

It's also reported that journalists were forced to the ground at gunpoint.

On Monday, an Islamic convert named Martin Couture-Rouleau ran over two Canadian soldiers near Montreal, which ended in one of the soldier being killed. Then, the police shot and killed Couture-Rouleau.

The government was concerned with Couture-Rouleau earlier in the year, but it didn't have anything to charge him with.

"We could not arrest someone for having radical thoughts. It's not a crime in Canada," RCMP Supt. Martine Fontaine said.

He waited in his car for at least two hours before running over the two men.
