Pusha T 'My Name Is My Name' Release Date: Oct. 8 Album Recreates 90's Era Hip Hop
Pusha T recently announced that his upcoming solo debut studio album would be titled, "My Name Is My Name."
During an interview with HipHopSince1987, the Clipse rapper explained why he chose the title, "Basically, I was trying to pick a title that embodied who I am as an artist... and I wanted people to understand that Pusha is everything I really, really am."
Then, he continued by discussing the origin of his album title, and where his inspiration has stemmed from, "Actually, it's a line in 'Pain' where I actually say 'my name is my name.' And of course, that line comes from Marlo Stanfield in the series 'The Wire.' It's one of the more prominent catch phrases he said during the end of that series."
"He was basically saying, 'I am who I am. This is what I got. I stand on my name. I live this," Pusha T said. "And if you know anything about his character, he's young, brash, amongst a lot of heavyweights. But he didn't care about any of the past or history. He was like 'Man, I'm out here to get my money at all costs. No rules, no regulations. I'm here to compete.' I just felt like that really embodied my presence in the Rap game."
The G.O.O.D rapper, known for his innate ability of street-styled flow, intricate rhymes and complex metaphors, is enthusiastic about his latest project and elaborates on the lyrical content of the album: "I didn't learn the art form of rapping in those different stages - I only knew to be as ill as you can be lyrically," Pusha T said. "It's all about creating that nostalgia. When it came to 'My Name Is My Name,' I said to myself, 'Man, I wanna make something that I love and I wanna listen to myself. I wanna go to an era and revisit an era that was strictly about lyrics.' So I had to go to 1995-1999 - a great mixtape era, a great B.I.G. / Jay era. To me, it was just more so about re-creating the greatness of an amazing time."
The acclaimed lyricist's first solo project features many guest artists such as, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and of course, Yeezus. "My Name Is My Name" is set for release on October 8 under G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam Recordings.
