Amir Khan will look to score an impressive victory when he collides with Devon Alexander on Dec. 13 in Las Vegas to move one step closer to getting a shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya said that Khan managed to impress during his fight against Luis Collazo in May, where he ran away with a lopsided decision victory.

But in order to get a shot against Mayweather next year, De La Hoya said that Khan should score a big win against Alexander, who could also get a fight against the reigning pound-for-pound king if he wins impressively against the Briton.

"Amir Khan looked good against my boy Collazo, but I have a feeling he wants to make a statement against Alexander," De La Hoya said via BoxingScene. "What's happening here is they [Khan and Alexander] realize they have to prove themselves if they want to get a really big fight, like against Mayweather."

Khan will likely get a shot against Mayweather should he emerge victorious in his upcoming fight, but Alexander vowed that he will do his best to end the Bolton, England native's bid to face Floyd Jr.

"He tried to just wait to get the Mayweather fight and he didn't get it, and now he has to fight me," Alexander said. "So it is inevitable we get in the ring and see who's best and who is catapulted to the next level. I think I have the ability to outshine him in this one."

And while De La Hoya said that Alexander also could get a shot against Mayweather, the 27-year-old Missouri native pointed out that he doesn't believe that the unbeaten champion will give him a shot, saying that Floyd Jr. prioritizes fighters who have the least likely chance of beating him.

"For me personally, Floyd looks at a fighter who is going to pose the least threat to him," said Alexander, who holds a 26-2 record with 14 knockouts. "Every black that Floyd has faced, has given him some type of trouble. I think every black fighter is going to make him think in there. I don't think he wants to think anymore."
