Elizabeth Pena's Dead: Cause of Death Revealed for 'La Bamba' Actress
The Insider With Yahoo reported on Wednesday that Elizabeth Pena's death certificate has revealed alcohol was involved with her death.
Alcoholism contributed to the cause of the 55-year-old actress. Her death certificate read she died from cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiogenic shock, acute gastrointestinal bleeding and cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol.
Best known for her roles in movies, such as "La Bamba" and "Rush Hour," Elizabeth Pena died on Oct. 14 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She recently played Vergara's mother on "Modern Family" and was seen on the crime drama series "Matador" on the El Rey Network.
Mario-Francisco Robles, nephew of Elizabeth, posted her obituary on the Latino Review.
He wrote, "Tonight, my family is heartbroken. There's now a void that will never be filled. All we can do now is remember your sharp sense of humor, your endless hunger for life, and your never ending pursuit of happiness."
Elizabeth Pena was an actress for decades. She appeared on screen many times, including on the 1990 psychological horror drama "Jacob's Ladder." She voiced the seductive Mirage in Pixar's "The Incredibles."
Pena also spent some time behind the scenes, occasionally directing. She ran an episode of the 2000 boxing drama "Resurrection Boulevard" and starred in 21 episodes.
Her nephew's eulogy wrote, "She undoubtedly helped fuel my love of film. She informed my desire to be an actor, writer and director. I followed in her footsteps at the High School of Performing Arts. It still remains my life's goal to earn a living doing what I love.
"She did it all, and she made it look fun. She made it look easy."
The inspirational actress is survived by her husband of 20 years, Hans Rolla, and two teenage children, Fiona and Kaelan, as well as her sister, Tania, and mother, Estela.
