'Cinderella' Movie Updates: Four Things We Know About the Upcoming Disney Film
On March 13, 2015, the remake to Disney classic film "Cinderella" will be released with a stellar cast including Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.
The movie is set to tell the story of the classic fairy tale about a servant step-daughter who wins the heart of a prince. With very little time left and a trailer set to be released in the next few weeks, here are number of things we know about the film.
Blanchett will be Lady Tremaine
After playing the villainous roles of Irina Spalko in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and Marissa Wiegler in "Hanna," Blanchett will bring another antagonist to life. The actress is well known for her diversity in roles and for her compelling screen presence. She is two Oscar winner for her roles in "The Aviator" and "Blue Jasmine" and has also been nominated for three other films. Her most popular roles included Elizabeth in both "Elizabeth" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and Galadriel in "The Lord of the Rings" series and "The Hobbit" series. She will next be seen in "Carol" from director Todd Haynes, Terrence Malick's "Knights of Cup" and "Jungle Book: Origins."
The Film is in Post-Production
Back in August, the movie was rated PG by MPAA, and it was noted that film was almost complete. The feature started production on Sept. 23, 2013, and production took place in Pinewood studios in London as well as Blenheim Palace, Windsor Castle, Old Navy College and Black Park. The film was reported to have entered post production in December 2013, and it was also announced that Patrick Doyle, who is best known for his work on "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," would be composing the film's music.
Disney already has TV deal
It is not surprise that Disney already has the film's TV premiere date. The feature is set to premiere on TV through Turner Broadcasting system in the middle of 2017. That would be almost two years after the film's release. However, Disney hopes it will be able to obtain the same success of "Alice in Wonderland," "Maleficent" and "Oz: the Great and Powerful." Those movies were a success in theaters and had long lasting theatrical runs. "Alice in Wonderland" made a total of $334 million; "Oz: The Great and Powerful" made $234 million; and "Maleficent" made $241 million. The features were also a huge success on home video. "Maleficent" will be released on DVD in the next few weeks, and it looks like it will be a huge hit as well.
With the staying power of these three live-action adaptations, it's no surprise that "Cinderella" will try to maximize its income before going to TV.
Helena Bonham Carter as Fairy Godmother
Fans of the film are probably asking why it was Blanchett who is playing the villain when Helena Bonham Carter is in the movie. Bonham Carter is known for playing witches and villainous roles, including Bellatrix Lestrange. However, director Kenneth Branagh has subverted audiences expectations, making for one of most interesting casting choices a Disney film has had in a while.
"Cinderella" is set to star Lily James in the title role, Hayley Atwell, Holliday Grainger, Stellan Skarsgard, Derek Jacobi, Richard Madden and Ben Chaplin.
