Former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco, who accidentally shot himself in a finger while cleaning his gun, tweeted a photo of the injured hand on Wednesday.

"Got no sleep. Hope I can keep my finger but grateful it wasn't something worse ... " he tweeted.

Canseco added that his fiancée, Leila Knight, was taking good care of him.

Knight, who has also tweeted about Canseco's injury, has received backlash from Canseco haters on social media, reports Deadspin. Her remedy? Tweeting back "DOUCHE" to all haters who tweet negative comments. It's proven to be an arduous task with a growing list of offenders.

The former baseball slugger had to undergo hand surgery after he nearly shot off the middle finger of his left hand while cleaning a gun at the kitchen table, Knight told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. Doctors informed the couple that even if the finger can be saved, Canseco will never regain full use of his left hand.

Police and emergency responders arrived at Canseco's northeast Las Vegas home following the accidental shooting. Canseco was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

"It was a serious hand injury," Las Vegas Metro Police Lt. Mark Reddon told NBC News.

Reddon said that Canseco didn't realize there was a round in the chamber as he cleaned the large-caliber handgun.

Canseco hit over 450 home runs during his 17 seasons in the MLB, won the 1986 American League Rookie of the Year award and was the league MVP two years later while playing for the Oakland A's.

An admitted steroid user, Canseco claimed the use of performance enhancing drugs was widespread in the MLB. He wrote two books about it: "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big" and "Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and the Battle to Save Baseball."
