Fight fans are calling for a showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gennady Golovkin in 2015, but Hall of Famer Oscar de La Hoya believes that the fight won't happen.

Golovkin, the reigning International Boxing Organization (IBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight world champion, recently expressed willingness to go down to 154 pounds to get a shot at Mayweather.

However, de La Hoya is convinced that Mayweather, the reigning World Boxing Council light middleweight champion, will not face Golovkin, who holds an impressive 31-0 record with 28 knockout victories.

De La Hoya said in an interview with BoxingScene that if Golovkin wants a big-money fight in the near future, the 32-year-old Kazakh should focus on working his way up the ladder to earn a shot against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"It will never happen, let's put it that way," de La Hoya said of the Mayweather-Golovkin fight. "One fight that most likely will happen, who is willing to take the challenge -- is Triple G vs. Canelo. They have sparred many times before. In time, I am very optimistic that it will happen -- given time and once Canelo is ready to move up 160 and he gets a little older. He just turned 24, so he's got time. All of those dangerous fights Canelo is willing to take."

Golovkin, who is coming off a second-round knockout win against Marco Antonio Rubio last week, is set to defend his title against Martin Murray on Feb. 21 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, recently said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio, that they are very willing to face Mayweather at a 154-pound catchweight. And if they eventually get the chance to collide with Mayweather, Sanchez is confident that Golovkin will knock the reigning pound-for-pound king out.

"I am confident that Gennady stops him within twelve rounds," Sanchez said of knocking Mayweather out. "Of course it's gonna be a lot work, it's gonna be difficult, but I think that he does."
